Can global engagement truly be sustainable?
This QS Quacquarelli Symonds Insights article digs into the question at a time when expectations for low-carbon international education are rising fast. Nearly half of prospective students say they’d choose a more sustainable university over one ranked in the global top 100 – a clear signal that climate action can’t be a side project anymore.
As IESG CEO Ailsa Lamont notes, universities face a tricky balancing act, and real change only sticks when sustainability is pushed from the top. She highlights three priorities for the sector:
Build climate literacy so staff and students understand the impact of travel
Use institutional influence to encourage more sustainable practice across partners and suppliers
Actively avoid emissions where possible, and minimise them where travel is essential.
